Democrat Jasmine Crockett will succeed retiring Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson in the 30th Congressional District after defeating her Republican opponent James Rodgers in Tuesday’s election. Crockett had been expected to win the deep-blue Dallas district and her victory keeps the seat in the Democrats’ column. But the transition from Johnson, 86, will represent a generational changing of the guard for the area.
Johnson blazed a trail with a number of historic firsts over the course of her long career, including the first Black person and first woman to chair the House Science, Space and Technology Committee. Crockett, 41, represents a fresh face and a new progressive voice in the delegation.
