Obama previously embraced the idea of a "chained" consumer price index (chained CPI) -- a change in the way inflation is measured -- as a gesture of goodwill toward Republicans who said they were interested in crafting a compromise deal for deficit reduction. Republicans were quick to slam the president ??s decision to leave the chained CPI out of this year ??s budget proposal.
