Three new studies published in Science Magazine provide more evidence that US hydraulic fracturing has increased the incidence of US earthquakes almost 10 fold between 2000 and 2011. Most of the quakes were small, but some exceeded 5.0 and caused damage and injuries. The major culprit appears to be the waste fluid injection methods used to pump the toxic fluids resulting from fracking back into subsurface rock formations. |
