The energy retrofit of the Empire State Building had the makings of a great story right from the start. Visionary Tony Malkin, in an effort to revive the 2.7 million-square foot New York landmark, assembled a team of leading organizations to develop a retrofit program that would maximize energy savings, build a strong economic case, save 38 percent of the building's energy and $4.4 million annually--and created 252 jobs to boot. This is one of probably millions of examples which expose the lie that cutting fossil fuel use will "cost too much." Truth is, "putting a better plug in the bathtub" will cost vastly less than running more hot water.
