Brazil files Criminal Charges over Oil Spill

Imagine that there is at least one place in the world where big corporations are not above the law. Last fall, an oil rig owned by Chevron leaked 3,000 barrels of oil off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. The Brazilian government has filed criminal charges against Chevron and several of its managers and owners personally. The prosecutor, Santos de Oliveira, speaks of jail terms up to 31 years. This follows an $11 billion civil suit filed last November. The spill is only a thousandth the size of the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the spring of 2010.
