Economics as an intellectual field has been practiced in a way that is dishonest and biased toward "freedom" of the rich to exploit everyone else. The economics profession has provided the intellectual framework and justification for the inequality and centralization of corporate power the Occupiers are challenging. Under the guise of "objective analysis", they have for generations justified policies that enable bankers and CEOs to operate in secret. They have rationalized the denial collective bargaining rights and shareholder rights to information. The economics establishment provides the intellectual rationalization for an unfair and exploitive system. On November 2nd nearly 70 students walked out of an introductory economics class at Harvard in solidarity with the Occupy movement. The mainstream media largely ignored the protest. |
