The beginning of the U.S. drawdown in Afghanistan figures to be a huge political event. President Obama announced in a speech at West Point in December 2009 that he would send an additional 30,000 troops for a temporary surge, then begin a conditions-based withdrawal in July 2011. Nearly two thirds (64 percent) of Americans say the war in Afghanistan isn't worth fighting, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll. |
