While I was getting fired from a tenured teaching position in Shelley, Idaho (see bio), the father of one of my students informed me that his friend, Roger Boisjoly, an engineer who worked on the Challenger, called him in tears the night before the launch. He said it was going to explode, and he would not watch it. It was, in my very strong opinion, the Mormon mentality that says, "Don't question authority," that permeated this part of NASA and led to the disaster(even into Huntsville, Alabama, where final approval was given). The book on the topic is no longer in print. Just like "Death of an American," wherein John Singer was shot and killed for not jumping to the whims of Val Edrigton, superintendent in Kamas, Utah. Edrington was the superintendent who was then shuffled to Shelley, Idaho, illegally by the Mormons (to protect him from his fear of retaliation), and who had me fired. |
