U.S. troop strength in Afghanistan has nearly tripled since Barack Obama took office, closing in on 100,000. Forces there are working under their third commander in 18 months - the conflict has been tough on generals. Although Obama says he intends to begin drawing down troop numbers next year, it may be a token withdrawal, because Afghan security forces make Iraq's look elite by comparison.
