Friday, April 22, 2011 Undoing Medicare: The Real 'Death Tax' - James Fallows - Politics - The AtlanticSHARE
From my days as a school kid I remember the original debate over creating Medicare. At the time, my dad -- a small-town doctor and at that stage a conservative -- was, like most doctors and the AMA as a whole, strongly against the plan, as a step toward "socialized medicine." After all, when his patients couldn't pay, he found ways to reduce or forgive their fees. The opposing argument, which in the long run convinced nearly everyone (including the AMA, and my father) was that leaving older people exposed to the threat of open-ended and potentially ruinous medical expenses, or dependent on individual doctors' charity, was harmful all around.
Friday, April 22, 2011 The New Corporate World Order | The NationSHARE
The debate over Republicans' insistence on continued tax breaks for the superrich and the corporations they run should come to a screeching halt with the report in Tuesday's Wall Street Journal headlined "Big US Firms Shift Hiring Abroad." Those tax breaks over the past decade, leaving some corporations such as General Electric to pay no taxes at all, were supposed to lead to job creation, but just the opposite has occurred. As the WSJ put it, the multinational companies "cut their work forces in the US by 2.9 million during the 2000s while increasing employment overseas by 2.4 million, new data from the US Commerce Department show."
Friday, April 22, 2011 The GOP's Misplaced Rage - The Daily BeastSHARE
Leading conservative economist Bruce Bartlett writes that the Obama-hating town-hall mobs have it wrong--the person they should be angry with left the White House seven months ago.
Where is the evidence that everything would be better if Republicans were in charge? Does anyone believe the economy would be growing faster or that unemployment would be lower today if John McCain had won the election? I know of no economist who holds that view. The economy is like an ocean liner that turns only very slowly. The gross domestic product and the level of employment would be pretty much the same today under any conceivable set of policies enacted since Barack Obama's inauguration.
Friday, April 15, 2011 Sarah Palin Baby HoaxSHARE
An interesting footnote has emerged to a theory that raged around the Internet during Sarah Palin's candidacy for Vice President:
The theory is that Sarah Palin is actually the grandmother of her purported son Trig, not the mother, and that she staged a gigantic hoax during the campaign to cover up this fact.
Friday, April 15, 2011 All Wisconsin Votes Unverified | TruthoutSHARE
Whether they're accurate is another question entirely ...
The sturm and drang over those votes - and over the clerk who misreported them on election night - may well serve to distract from the real concerns about the state's Supreme Court election last week and those to come in the very near future. - Brad Friedman
As anyone who has ever read The BRAD BLOG likely knows, I am the last person in the world to defend Waukesha County, Wisconsin's hapless, hopeless, incompetent, untrustworthy, shamefully partisan, failure of a County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus.
Tuesday, April 12, 2011 "Biblical Slavery" For Non-Christians? Yes, Suggests Website of Mike Huckabee's Favorite Historian David Barton - SpeakSHARE
Huckabee is so enthusiastic about the teaching of Wallbuilders head Barton that at the March 2011 Rediscover God In America conference Huckabee stated that he wishes all Americans could be forcibly indoctrinated, at gunpoint no less, with Barton's version of American history. As Huckabee told conference attendees,
"I almost wish that there would be, like, a simultaneous telecast, and all Americans would be forced-forced at gunpoint no less-to listen to every David Barton message, and I think our country would be better for it. I wish it'd happen."
The pro-slavery article on Barton's Wallbuilders web site would seem to qualify as one of Barton's teachings given that it's written by a Wallbuilders board member and Barton refers his readers directly to the article, clearly an endorsement of it.

Friday, April 8, 2011 Genetically modified cows produce 'human' milk - TelegraphSHARE
The scientists have successfully introduced human genes into 300 dairy cows to produce milk with the same properties as human breast milk.
Human milk contains high quantities of key nutrients that can help to boost the immune system of babies and reduce the risk of infections.
The scientists behind the research believe milk from herds of genetically modified cows could provide an alternative to human breast milk and formula milk for babies, which is often criticised as being an inferior substitute.
Friday, April 8, 2011 Questions Surround Votes Found in Waukesha County - E.D. Kain - American Times - ForbesSHARE
A clerk in Waukesha County, Wisconsin is set to release a new vote tally giving conservative judge David Prosser nearly 8,000 more votes than expected and tipping the balance of the election back to Prosser from Kloppenburg. There's only one problem. The clerk's office in question may not be the most reliable in the state of Wisconsin:
Friday, April 8, 2011 TEXAS BEER JOINT SUES CHURCH over LIGHTNING STRIKE! - - - numerous via a Google search - RichardDawkins.netSHARE
ONLY IN TEXAS ... Texas Beer Joint Sues Church in MT.Vernon, Texas . Drummond's Bar began construction on an expansion of their building to increase their business. In response, the local Baptist Church started a campaign with petitions and prayers to block the bar from expanding. Work progressed right up until the week before the grand reopening when lightning struck the bar and it burned to the ground! After it was burned to the ground by the lightning strike, the church folks were rather smug in their outlook, bragging about "the power of prayer", until the bar owner sued the church on the grounds that the church ... "was ultimately responsible for the demise of his building, either through direct or indirect actions or means."
Tuesday, November 30, 2010 Dem state lawmakers defecting to GOP post-election -- Shannon McCaffreySHARE
Democrats switch sides after the election is over. I believe if a Representative switches camps, he/she should be removed from office, and a new election held to fill the vacancy. The people voted for one thing, and got something else.
