(1 comments) Monday, April 23, 2018 The New Frontline in the Battle for Campaign Finance ReformSHARE
With the FEC asleep at the wheel, the best hope for campaign finance reform might be local governments.High levels of independent expenditures, the prominence of big donors, and a lack of transparency about funding sources have become part and parcel of the electoral process — thanks to legislative changes and agency gridlock.By closely following the flow of cash into political coffers, a new report from the Campaign Finance Institute (CFI) sheds light on what has caused the ever-increasing polarization of political campaigns. But not all is grim on the reform front. Where federal bodies have failed to regulate and enforce laws intended to abate political corruption, cities and states are moving ahead with local measures that hold out the promise of more transparent and representative elections.
Friday, April 20, 2018 The New Yorker: AMERICA CONTINUES TO IGNORE THE RISKS OF ELECTION HACKINGSHARE
Last month, when Congress authorized three hundred and eighty million dollars to help states protect their voting systems from hacking, it was a public acknowledgement that, seven months out from the midterm elections, those systems remain vulnerable to attack...But it’s not just decrepitude. Software vulnerabilities, unreliable tabulators, and unprotected memory cards have left voting systems open to exploitation ever since electronic machines were introduced... Three hundred and eighty million dollars is not enough to change the threat landscape. Without a commitment from the federal government, the states, and counties to do whatever is necessary to establish and maintain secure elections, our greatest strength as a nation, the regular accounting of the vox populi, will remain susceptible to abuse, subversion, and other dark arts.

"The Russians' successful hack of Illinois' voter systems in the 2016 elections was a wake-up call and demonstrated a clear vulnerability in our election security," Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin said in a statement. "We know that they will try to target our systems again during the 2018 midterm elections."The Russian hack gave operatives access to confidential information from a reported 90,000 voters but state officials said hackers were not actually able to manipulate vote totals.

Democracy lovers: Please take 4 minutes to watch this excellent video! From VerifiedVoting.org:The New York Times published an interactive piece on election security today that included a video featuring Verified Voting fellow, Alex Halderman. The piece was the result of a months-long collaboration between Verified Voting and the New York Times.“Alex Halderman, along with the New York Times, successfully demonstrated how vulnerable these voting machines can be,” said Marian K. Schneider, president of Verified Voting. “We want people to understand in a visual way how something like this might happen. Although it is only a risk and not a certainty that something like this could occur, we need to be prepared and able to recover. These machines don’t allow us to do that. It’s time we prepare to monitor, detect, respond and recover from any potential attacks that undermine our democracy.”
