Dagmar Honigmann is in her sixties and has worked as a writer and educator. She is the daughter of German refugees who made separate middle-of-the-night escapes from East Germany after World War II, in her motherâ€™s case with help from an American Army officer who risked not only his career but an international incident by doing so. When her mother developed Alzheimers and began living more and more in the past, Dagmar was repeatedly reminded of the fact that democracies can fail â€“ and of what can happen when they do (such as when her mother recalled having been on a train that was just leaving Dresden at the start of the Allied firebombing that burned many of cityâ€™s residents to death).
She has turned to writing because news is now coming too quickly for people to note some of its important implications. Thus, in her columns, she specializes in politically related news that has almost escaped notice or been forgotten too quickly, and in unasked questions, especially disturbing ones. (If she had to give the articles she is writing a working title, it would be â€œDisturbing the Peaceâ€.)
She writes as a public service, so she strongly encourages readers to share her work in whatever way they see fit.
