The subsidized interest rate on student loans is likely to double to 6.8% in July. Although the Congress and the White House are agreeing that something should be done, they haven't reached a consensus on what should be done. The House, being republican controlled passed a bill in the last week of June which would prevent the rates from doubling at present but would be allowed to rise later. President Obama had vowed to exercise veto on it.
