Memorial Day Reflection: Freedom Isn't Free

As we are so often reminded by war's supporters, perhaps the reason so many had to die is that freedom is not free. Try as I may, I can't understand the meaning of this explanation and alleged justification for the wanton death and slaughter of so many of God's children.

Stuck in Traffic on Christmas Eve

As I waited, aggravated and impatient, in a long line of Christmas traffic for a very slow traffic light to change, a man dressed in Desert Camouflage BDUs slowly limped, cold and tired, down the long row of idling cars. Hanging around his neck was a sign on which was written, "Veteran, will work for wages to feed my family," and in his hand a coffee can hoping for a possible donation.

As a consequence of the draft, many young Americans who questioned the justness and necessity of the war, were confronted with a profound moral dilemma. Whether to shame oneself and one's family by expatriating ? fleeing to Canada ? or risk injury or death by becoming, in their view, a murderer, or an accessory to murder that disguised itself as national defense. I had an additional option, however.

As was clearly demonstrated during the last election, America has had enough of an incompetent, deceitful, and arrogant Executive Branch and a cowardly and inept "rubber stamp" Congress. We have had enough of "middle of the road", "do nothing" politics while other people's children continue to die for a mistake.
