Sam Kephart was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

His family has been involved in law and Republican politics for more than 100 years.

His first serious exposure to politics occurred in his teens when he worked summers at his father’s law firm as a runner and non-legal research assistant. During this time, Sam was privileged to meet various government officials and politicians. He also got to work closely with his father’s law partner, former Minnesota Governor Harold Stassen.

Stassen, who was an original signer of the United Nations Charter, ran as a Republican candidate in the 1968 primary for U.S. President.

In fall 1969, Sam entered University of California, San Diego. In his second year, during the Vietnam conflict, the campus environment turned radical with anti-war demonstrations and destructive behavior. Conservative leaning, Sam felt alienated from the prevailing quite radical sentiments on campus and returned to Philadelphia.

Almost immediately upon his return, Sam was offered a sales position with the local branch of Westinghouse Security Systems. He found a niche for himself and started successfully selling high-end security systems and services in the Philadelphia area. This position led him back to the San Diego area, where he remained in that industry until 1987.

While working for Westinghouse, from 1974-76, Sam attended National University at night and earned his BBA, Magna Cum Laude. Sam’s next professional experience included working for a successful serial entrepreneur where he learned the property tax abatement business and was instrumental in setting up a profitable national affiliate program.

In 1993, Sam started his own business, Virtual Acumen, offering corporate film, video, and digital media services to a wide variety of businesses, with a specialty in the hospitality, real estate, telecommunications, high technology, and medical markets.

In early 1988, Sam met his wife to be, Sammie Mauszycki, a South Dakota native. After dating for two years, they were married in September 1990 in Mitchell.

For fifteen years, Sam and Sammie frequented South Dakota, both in Mitchell and the Black Hills, to visit family and friends. While on a trip to the Black Hills in the summer of 2003, Sam and Sammie decided that South Dakota was a much better and safer place in which to live and raise their family.

In January 2004, they moved to Spearfish.

He was an active participant with the Lawrence County Republican Party, however, he recently quit.

In the 2007-2008 primary cycle, he ran, unsuccessfully, for the U. S. Senate seat currently held by Tim Johnson.

Sam and Sammie live in Spearfish with their two daughters, Lexie and Allison, who attend public school.

His pastimes include travel, boating, reading and following politics, economics, and world affairs.
