SHARE Thursday, July 31, 2008 Hearings Set In California's Proposition 8 Same Gender Marriage Battle
The Sacramento Superior Court, in two different departments has set hearings for two differnt challenges to California's Proposition 8. Depending on the proponents or the opponent's view, if approved by the voters, Prop. 8 would either eliminate the right of same gender couples to marry, or, might potentially, also invalidate all marraiges performed prior to the initiative's passege. The hearings are set for August 7, 2008.

A recent Field Poll on Proposition 8, that if passed would exclude the right to marry for same gender couples in California and in effect write discrimination into the California Constitution, reveals that there is only 7% undecided at this early stage in the election cycle and 51% in opposition as compared to 41%. After the poll was conducted, the ballot title was changed to reflect its true nature. Passage now is doubtful.

The Bush Administration's Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer ignorantly said that The Humane Society of the United States is partly responsible for the magnitude of the largest beef recall in the nation's history Thursday. After many failed attempts in the past to go successfully to the USDA, the group went to California authorities who requested that they sit on the video. They are not to blame in any way. The USDA fell down.

The governor flip-flopped on term limits. Schwarzenbegger is playing a dicey, ill-advised move prompted by political realities.
Arnold endorsed Proposition 93, the legislators' ballot initiative to change their term limits, because he politically needs to keep the current leaders around. He doesn't want them termed out because he has learned to work with them.
