I was educated at MIT (BS Life Sciences), University of Chicago (PhD Physiology), and Cornell (postdoctoral). I am presently professor emeritus of physiology at West Virginia University. I have written a book on overpopulation, mass extinction and global warming.

Jack Goldsmith's review of William Shawcross's book, Justice and the Enemy, in the New York Times Book Review, January 22, 2012, contends that the military tribunals of Guantanamo detainees are reasonable attempts of a government, acting in good faith, to provide fair trials. The tribunals, considered in conjunction with the detentions, are nothing of the sort. All Americans now face the same treatment.
