Karl Wilson is a recently retired teacher, tutor, and business owner. He spent many years tutoring, some as a substitute teacher, and a short time as a full-time teacher in a Hawaii public school. It was that last stint that did it. My long-standing academic interests are in political economy and trade, and political psychology, especially insights into the reactionary, authoritarian mind.

Work Harder, They Say What really is killing us is the abject inability or unwillingness to face up to our rigged and dysfunctional system. Even Obama falls into this when he encourages hard work and innovation. Fine, Mr. President, but that's not really what ails us. Our overclass has no intention of letting public discourse ever become constructive and insightful.

Republican Spin: Impressive, Isn't It? You've got to hand it to Republican Party operatives. After more than 30 years of constant effort, conservatives within the party, media, the judiciary, and in the corporate world, have managed to turn upside down much of what the public thought it knew about government, unions, taxes, and even teachers.

Labor Just Needs to be Flexible We are becoming a nation of nomadic and part-time labor. Not all of us, of course, but enough to impact wages, working conditions, communities, and families. We are told that labor must be flexible, and in the face of record profits and compensation. Workers and their families are increasingly being forced to relocate, across country if necessary. So much for settling down. It beats no job at all, they say.
