Why we need to challenge Russia's human shields narrative Faced with the devastating consequences of its actions, Russia has increasingly fallen back on a single legal justification: human shields. Indeed, Moscow repeatedly suggested that Ukraine's military is deliberately using civilians as a screen to defend legitimate military targets.

Does it really matter if Netanyahu ends up behind bars? To create an ideological shift, it is insufficient to cut off the king's head; rather, what is needed is a sea change in public opinion. Tragically, even if Netanyahu ends up behind bars, it appears that the colonial common sense will continue to reign for many years to come.

The human rights of the settler Netanyahu's description of any potential evacuation of the West Bank colonies reflects the ethics of settler colonialism in which any attempt to dislocate the settlers is now equated with injustice. Despite Netanyahu's attempts to revise history, it is crucial to remember that state-sanctioned ethnic cleansing and ongoing human rights violations is what enabled the Jewish settlers to occupy the lands in the first place.

The human rights crisis is about domination, not perception The main crisis of human rights is not about perceptions, but about its complicity with domination.

Drones and the New Ethics of War This Christmas small drones were among the most popular gift under the tree in the U.S. with manufacturers stating that they sold 200,000. While the rapid infiltration of drones into the gaming domain clearly reflects that drones are becoming a common weapon among armed forces, their appearance in Walmart, Toys "R" Us and Amazon serves, in turn, to normalize their deployment in the military.

Israel's dissenting voices get lost in the war echo chamber Israeli politicians across the political spectrum appear to support the attack on Gaza. ...the left has organised several protests, fifty people here a hundred people there, and, while often this is how resistance begins, it is not clear how, within the current atmosphere, these sober voices will amount to anything. It is a time of deep despair for all those who envision a different and brighter future for this land.

Escape Route from the Nuclear Shadow over the Middle East To be sure, I am against Iran developing a nuclear weapon, but I am also opposed to Israel having a nuclear arsenal, which at 200 warheads would be larger than the arsenal of Britain. There is, after all, a connection between the two and this connection needs to be spelled out if a broader framework is to be adopted.

Israel must give up its worst-kept secret: the bomb The Middle East has emerged as a nuclear proliferation hotbed. Israel has held onto its nuclear weapons, refused to join the NPT, significantly expanded its stockpile of fissile material for weapons, and developed advanced delivery systems. Targeting one country will not solve this regional problem.

Rethinking the two-state solution If J Street does not want to find itself promoting an irrelevant political program, it will need to begin thinking about an alternative that guarantees both democracy and a certain strain of Zionism, but also advocates a single state in which Jews and Palestinians live together as equals.

The Oslo Accords' Calamities Reading the Oslo Accord agreements carefully it becomes clear how Oslo created the Palestinian Authority as an Israeli subcontractor, and how it transferred to this fledgling body weak civil institutions and a totally dependent economy that could not support the institutions.

Perpetual Peace Boats appear in many of Nave's paintings, and seem to symbolize for him the possibility of change. In My Ego and Me, the haunting but surprisingly un-despairing figures are foregrounded by an empty boat with four white oars. When I asked Nave about the recurring boat imagery in his work, he said: "It could be a flight fantasy, or the condition of possibility of creating something new, or maybe both."

Living Without Your Name In Israel, if you are a Palestinian and want to rent a flat, at times, to misquote Arthur Miller, you have to live without your name.

Zionist history: A short quiz Israeli politics, as well as the public discourse informing it, have shifted over the years; so much so that, within the current political climate, declarations once uttered by former Prime Minister Menachem Begin, who passed away 20 years ago, can now only be reiterated by leftists. Today, citizens who hold such positions are simply called "traitors."

Preparing Israel for war The recent attack is not only about allocating more money to the military; it is also about Iran. A headline in Yisrael Hayom declared, "Iran is Behind the Jihad's Rocket Attack." Hence, another objective was to show the Israeli public that Iran, by means of a proxy, had already begun attacking Israel.

Is Israel Preparing an Assault Against Iran? What is remarkable about this saber rattling is its abstraction. Not a single analyst noted that entering war is easy but ending it is far more difficult, particularly if on the other side stands a regional power with vast resources and a well-trained military.

Netanyahu and the One-State Solution Israel's unwillingness to compromise on key issues might annul a two-state solution, making only power-sharing viable.

Netanyahu and the one-state solution Netanyahu's not-so-implicit threat that Israel will continue its colonial project if the Palestinians do not accept some kind of "Bantustan solution" no longer carries any weight. The two peoples have already passed this juncture. The Palestinians have clearly declared that they will not bow down to such intimidations, and it is now clear that the conflict has reached an entirely new intersection.

Israel's New Laws Promote Repression in Israel there appears to be a trend whereby large parts of the citizenry are not only acquiescent but have been supportive of Knesset members who are drafting new legislation to silence public criticism and to delegitimize political rivals, human rights organizations, and the Palestinian minority.

Israeli media "fears" the new Egypt Most Western countries constantly lament the absence of democracy in the Arab world, while supporting the dictators and helping them remain in office. In English this kind of approach has a very clear name: it is called hypocrisy.

McCarthy in Israel Although the recent scuffle seems to be about academic freedom, the assault on the Israeli academe is actually part of a much wider offensive against liberal values. Numerous forces in Israel are mobilizing in order to press forward an extreme-right political agenda.
