The Second American Civil War: A Middle Class Divided The Wisconsin governor's attempt to eliminate collective bargaining for unionized public workers is the first salvo in the second American civil war. Governor Walker's billionaire bosses, the Koch brothers have spent millions of dollars convincing nonunion workers that the bankruptcy of the country is because of greedy union workers. Pitting worker against worker, while the rich reap the spoils.

Israel's Settlement on Capital Hill Unbeknownst to most Americans, Israel's westernmost settlement is not in Palestine-Israel, but is located 6000 miles away on Capital Hill in Washington D.C. President-elect Obama's failure to speak out against the current humanitarian catastrophe of Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip is telling of the price he is willing to pay to maintain his status as kibbutznik-in-good-standing in Israel's westernmost settlement.

Obama Owes Diamond Real Change Not Perfection Over two million more young people voted in this election than in 2004; 18-year-old Diamond, a first-time voter from Harlem, was one of them. She supported Obama because she thinks he is "going to cure everything [and] make everything perfect." While her enthusiasm is reassuring, her blind faith in Obama is unsettling.

Focus on the Family's Toxic Corn Pone Letter From 2012 Focus on the Family's "Letter from 2012 in Obama's America" describes what America is like under a"far left-wing liberal" administration. While it's easy to poke fun at the corn pone FOF dishes out during an election, it stops being funny when one realizes that for tens of millions of people this fare is their only sustenance, and this toxic repast is the most poisonous of all substances to the body politic.

Nader and McKinney: "Wasting" a Vote for Lincoln's "Radical" Ideal It is a wasted vote to continually vote for two parties with track records for little more than self-preservation, corrupt-crony politics and for not making a "dent" . . . unless, of course, it's to total the entire country. These parties do not deserve the support of the American electorate time and time again. We need third viable third parties with a voice in the national debate

America Must Plumb Olmert's "Depths of Reality" Recently, the outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told the Israeli people the difficult truth. If they ever expect to live in peace in the Holy Land, Israel will have to return all occupied lands to the Palestinians. He said "it's time to lay everything on the table." This "depth of reality," as Olmert called it, is one that American politicians never lay on the table for the American electorate.

Can Obama Bridge America's Wall of Ignominy Recently I took Barack Obama to task for not mentioning Israel's 400-mile-long apartheid wall during his visit there. I received an email response reminding me about the 700-mile-long wall being built along the US/Mexico border-a wall Obama voted for in 2006. We do not need more walls to separate us. We need bridges to join us in economic parity.

President Obama Up Against the Middle East "Berlin Wall" On July 24, Obama stood on the site of the former Berlin Wall and reminded the crowd that sixty years ago the Berlin Airlift saved two million Berliners. The day before his speech in Berlin, he stood at the Western Wall in Jerusalem. He was standing less that two miles from the 400-mile-long apartheid wall that divides the West Bank from its freedom and from humanity's conscience. Obama never mentioned the apartheid wall.

Middle East Democracy: Blowback Through the Looking Glass United States' foreign policy regarding Iran and Israel for the past 60 years has created a contrary "Through the Looking Glass" world in the Middle East where the blowback is not an imaginary children's tale but the stuff of nightmares and the roost for returning chickens.

A MAD Foreign Policy: America's Irrational Defense of Israel Does America's "non-negotiable" support for Israel make the us more secure, or is it a MAD policy akin to the insane Cold War strategy of "mutual assured destruction?" Such a strategy may, in the war on terror between "radical Islam" and "freedom-loving democracies," result in the mutual assured destruction of both the United States and Israel.

U.S. Military's Middle East Crusade for Christ The recent acts of Quran desecration and proselytizing in Iraq by U.S. enlisted personnel are not just the acts of renegade evangelical Christians. An evangelical and fundamentalist message is implicit in the military culture and chain of command from Capital Hill, through the Pentagon, to the boots on the ground. Think Abu Ghraib!

A "Holey" Instrument of Peace in Iraq On May 19 the commander of U.S. forces in Baghdad apologized to an angry crowd in Radhwaniya because a soldier used a copy of the Quran for target practice. The soldier was sent home. But snipers have killed hundreds of innocent Iraqis without an apology or disciplinary action. Considering the U.S. military's recent concern for the "killing" of holy books, this essay proposes a"holey" workable peace plan for Iraq.

Pope Benedict Solves Mystery of Pedophile Priests . . . Sort of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger [a.k.a. God's Rottweiler], the uncompromising doctrinal watchdog bears little resemblance to his public persona as the kindly, thoughtful Pope Benedict XVI. During his visit to the United States, Benedict blamed American secularism for pedophile priests. Five years earlier, Cardinal Ratzinger blamed it on a conspiracy against the church. Which is the real Pope?

Sacrificing Children on the Altar of Parents' Fanatical Faith On Easter Sunday, 11-year-old Kara Neumann of Weston, Wisconsin, died of diabetic ketoacidosis because her parents' believed she could be cured by prayer and did not seek medical treatment. Unfortunately, the death of a child at the praying hands of religious parents is not uncommon and is sanctioned by state and federal religious exemption laws. Under Wisconsin law, Kara's parents are not likely to be held accountable.

The Children of Palestine and Israel are Cannon Fodder for the Rapture Since the beginning of the second intifada in September 2000, over 1,000 Palestinian and Israeli children have been killed by bullets and bombs. According to Pastor John Hagee and his evangelical organization, Christians United For Israel, this is an acceptable- if not desirable since a majority of the children were Muslim-price to pay to bring about Armageddon and the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

Waterboarding is Just Very Unpleasant . . . Right? Because waterboarding sounds so benign, it is the thin edge of the wedge that will work its way into the political and moral discussion and slowly, but inexorably, desensitize the nation to the overt and covert use of all forms of torture. But we can't lose sight of the fact that a particular torture technique is only a part of a longer torturing experience, which is never benign and always leaves scars.

Suchitoto 13: El Salvador's "American-made" Terrorism Act in Corporate Play In July 2007, thirteen citizens of El Salvador were arrested during a protest against the privatization of water resources. The defendants were charged with "terrorism" under Decree 108: The Special Law Against Act of Terrorism. Decree 108 was modeled on the USA PATRIOT Act. If convicted, the defendants could receive 60 years in prison. This is an object lesson for all Americans who value their right to dissent.

House Resolution 888: A Beast of Apocalyptic Stature H. R. 888 purports to be about nothing more than a recognition of America's history of religious faith. In reality, it is an attempt to rewrite history and secure the Christian Right's claim to both our nation's past and its present. Should this resolution pass, a beast of apocalyptic stature may be unleashed-portending the "end times" of our secular democracy . . . hyperbole notwithstanding

Christians Should Fear a Christian Nation People of faith, particularly mainstream Christians, have a vested interest in maintaining the secular nature of our government as envisioned by the Founding Fathers and have much to fear about living in a "Christian nation."

The Rapture Can't Happen Soon Enough to Suit Me Imagine American life and politics after the Christian Right has been "disappeared" en masse by the Rapture. With our "moral compass" blissfully ensconced behind the pearly gates, those of us left behind will just have to navigate life the best we can . . . oh darn. But if it's going to happen, why the heck can't it happen soon . . . I mean real soon.
