But…But…9/11 Changed Everything

A brief look at the state of domestic repression

By Warren Pease

Well, it certainly changed one thing: Most members of Congress have lost the ability to reason their collective way out of a paper bag, relying instead on their primitive lizard brain functions to guide them as they pretend to have a say in charting the course of the incredible shrinking Republic. And the results are as predictable as they are frightening; scared people make lousy choices.

The Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007 – a key element in the overall domestic repression strategy the DHS calls "Endgame" and which passed the House 404 to 6 last October – is among the final bricks in the wall that has as its foundation the Patriot Act and the Military Commissions Act, as well as various draconian executive orders and totalitarian presidential directives.

Add to these outrages and insults a systematic program of total domestic surveillance in place since early 2001, well before "the events of 9/11 changed everything," and now updated to include retargeting spy satellites to snoop on Americans, hiring a bunch of new TSA "behavior detection officers" to spot those of us who don't "look quite right," Blackwater militarizing local police forces while positioning itself to become the official domestic neo-con enforcement arm, various watch lists that nobody knows who's on and nobody who's on can get off of, alleged detention camps courtesy of Halliburton subsidiary KBR, and all this great new stuff the DHS has in store for us. All in all, 2008 should be a banner year for the surveillance and suppression industries.

Most people seem untroubled by this coordinated attack on fundamental Constitutional freedoms. They either haven't heard a word about it – which is likely if they use corporate mass media as their sole information source – or they look around, don't see any tanks or body armor, and assume it's all just alarmist nonsense.

I look at legislation and initiatives like those above and can draw only one conclusion: We no longer live in a democratic republic based on Constitutional law and 220 years of legal precedent. There is no due process; there is no habeas corpus; there is no right to counsel; there is no right to privacy; there is no right to speak one's mind; there is no prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment; there is no right to a speedy trial by jury. There is only rule by the most vicious and well funded. Might is now officially right in the land of liberty.

This is the reality in America v2.0. Just because the jackboot has yet to kick in my door, I'm not naive enough to believe that it can't happen here.

All the pieces are in place to lock down this country like a time vault. They just haven't gone fully operational yet. With time on their side, our masters are simply waiting for the right moment to dim the lights, raise the curtain and bring the hammer down.
