--Environment/Global Warming/Natural Resources. DEAD WRONG
DW declares there's no proven evidence of warming. Scientific reports were censured and restricted. The censures were performed by Phil Clooney, a petroleum lawyer. Congress is to hold hearings. A worry is about a tipping point when warming becomes irreversible. A theory is that ice and snow reflects the sun. All else absorbs. So, melting moves us closer to that point. Leading scientist, Jim Hanson, said we have ten years to get it right. A new report states that Greenhouse gases are starting to bubble up from melting thousands of years old permafrost five times faster than predicted, that the methane is 23 times more harmful than CO2 and the overall effects will be far worse than burning fossil fuel--a new tipping point.
DW backed away from air, land and water standards that will effect our natural resources--currently moving to sell off large blocks of old-growth forestry, including the Sierra Nevada and Sequoia, to loggers while backing from the Endangers Species Act and opposing simple steps to protect whales from sonar.
DW alienated the world (before 9/11) by walking from the Kyoto earth warming treaty. He said reducing would be just too costly--the leader of the wealthiest and greatest polluting nation, while over 120 other countries signed on. Goodwill was lost that we sorely need now.
World oil supply is being stretched. Terrorism could cause a disaster. A major project has been needed. DW talked only about drilling. Others about alternatives and conservation. All ways are critically needed.
A good chunk of the oil money sent overseas promotes anti-American ideas, funds terrorists, costs lives and develops weapons, now atomic weapons. Oil producing countries now have world clout via their customers. Venezuela is gaining. China negated help for victims in Darfur--China buys oil from Sudan--and Iran.
The drive to increase mpg is history. It is known that mileage of 40 mpg and better is doable. That could be huge since vehicles use 60% of our oil. The auto lobbyists at work. DW could use the bully pulpit to convince folks to conserve--driving, lights, etc. DW backed hydrogen just lately. Hydrogen is clean but will be derived from fossil fuel--an added layer of expense. Batteries have been vastly improved making hybrids a better choice over hydrogen fuel cells. Wrong again. Future generations will look back in dismay as they realize that those before them recklessly used up the oil with no thought of who might follow.
Clinton left with the country in a sweet spot with a large fiscal surplus. The expression, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" should have been up there in bright lights. DW right off reversed that with the tax cut mostly for the rich that did little for others and the recession to follow, rather it killed the "sweet spot" and produced a huge debt. No other president has cut taxes while fighting a war.
Strangely, the Republican Congress became corrupted big spenders. They lost self control. DW had yet to veto a spending bill or any bill for that matter until the stem cell bill. He is still promoting his tax cut and awarding billions to favored, single source bidders. Think Medicare. Billions vanished in Iraq, etc..
DW is reacting though by cutting programs for Medicaid, affordable housing, elderly nutrition, head start, college grants, etc--even veterans health benefits, war wounded pay and attempted to cut combat pay.
All in all, he promoted some of the most expensive legislation in the nation's history while sharply reducing ways to finance it--a gift added to the "no oil" gift for those to follow.
--Taxes. Dead Wrong
Adding to cutting income taxes, DW wants to eliminate the estate tax to protect small farms and family businesses. With current protection, it would help only a sliver of that group, but a huge sliver for the rich.
--Immigration. DEAD WRONG
DW has only recently been nudged to talk of restricting the inflow. Congress had appropriated funds to hire 10,000 more boarder patrol officers. Then, DW hired 210. He talked about amnesty while millions poured in. Amnesty granted to 3 million in '86 is a known failure. It attracted more immigrants who now have critical political mass and don't integrate well. Then, a porous boarder is great for terrorists. The cost to the rest of us for their health, education, etc. far exceeds the employers savings. Many immigrants pay little to no taxes, and even get rebates from the IRS.
Buchanan reports that there will be 100 million "illegals" here by '50 at current rates, that 1 in 12 of them has a criminal record, and there is a move to take back our southwest when they gain the majority--the Mexicans have a word for it. It works for Mexico. The money sent back significantly boosts their GDP. Some states are picking up the slack by fining the employers and even renters--taking away the honey.
