Borat is hilarious. Sasha Baron Cohen plays Borat, a journalist from Kazakstan-- an antisemitic, neanderthally sexist sex maniac. One friend told me he wasn't going to see it because of the antisemitism and sexism. I explained that Cohen makes jokes about, pretends to be anti-semitic while with unknowing victims of his prank scenes. These people often respond either nonchanlantly or in agreement. Borat asks, at a gun store, "Would this be a good gun to shoot Jews?" The clerk says yes. No pause, not reaction like there's something wrong with that idea. Borat's antisemitism is a way for himi to portray how accepted, how embraced it is-- same for sexism among men. The women didn't put up with his antics-- pretending women should pull plows, be prevented from getting education... The jokes are based on mocking antisemites, sexists, rednecks, etc. That makes it funny AND smart. There's one scene that, frankly, is completely disgusting. It's sort of funny too, but... then again, I don't want to give anything away. The movie only appeared on 837 screens, compared to most major movies, which open on over 3,000 screens, like THE SANTA CLAUSE 3: THE ESCAPE CLAUSE, which opened on 3,458 screens. Borat, on 800 screens, brought in over $26 million for the weekend, while Santa Clause 3 brought in about $20, with exposure in four times as many theaters. One reviewer speculated this could be the best-selling comedy EVER. Here's a skit by Borat, not from the movie, but it gives you an idea what I mean how he uses his anti-semitism to demonstrate tolerance or expression of antisemitism. I'd title this video THROW THE JEW DOWN THE WELL
