The boiling frog allegory tells of the amphibian tendency to leap out of boiling water if subjected to such and yet to be so comfortable in the wet strata to remain still in water slowly heated to a boil and die.
The boiling frog metaphor has been scientifically proven to be true, providing the heating is gradual enough. Another scientifically proven situation, like that of the boiling frog, is that people will behave exactly the same way, only in situations vastly more complicated.
One such situation allegorically reflective of man's amphibian like qualities is the Fukushima nuclear catastrophe, coincidentally involving the most precarious way to boil water and hence provide power, ever imagined. The earthquake and subsequent tsunami caused what now looks to be a multiple reactor meltdown releasing a deadly experiment on the world, dooming life indiscriminately. And yet there was a slow release of information, a slow heating process if you will, eventually leading to a tranquil frog in boiling water, a calm society doomed to radioactive poisoning and genetic defects. And yet at first the disaster of exploding nuclear reactors was downplayed. The utilization of crowd control hoses, fire trucks and heli-buckets was tactical coordination and not a show of doom. It was even inferred by some that a little plutonium would put hair on your chest instead of atomically ripping life apart.
We are a frog, in boiling water. The same week the earthquake and tsunami fell Japan the U.S.A. government expanded our very reptilian like war culture in attacking Libya. Where is the help for Japan? Where is the assistance in cooling down the water for the frog? The EPA has stopped measuring radiation levels. Where is our protection? Where is a measurement of the water we are in?
disaster exhibits the power of euphemisms and limited information to induce a
state of tranquility like slowly heated water.
It also of course is reason for immediate shutdown of nuclear power
plants worldwide. If humans had a
nervous system with a more developed sense of self preservation than your average swamp
creature all nuclear power would be shut down. Let's call for and stand up for nuclear abandonment.
