Sarah Parcak is the 2016 TED prize winner. She's a space archaeologist. What's that mean? She uses imaging from space to identify archaeological sites that have not been discovered before. She's found thousands and says that there are millions to be found everywhere and that it seems that anywhere she looks she finds ancient archaeological troves.
She uses a variety of imaging technologies-- infra-red thermal imaging and imaging that looks for chemical variations. Vegetation growing over ancient man-made structures has a different, less healthy chemical signature than vegetation not growing over ancient structures.

Here's a short interview she did with Steven Colbert. Colbert characterized her as the person to put Indiana Jones out of business. The image Colbert is holding is a space archeology image of the lost Egyptian city that was referred to in Indiana Jones. It has not been explored yet.

Below Sarah Parcak gives a short TED talk, describing her search for the capitol of ancient Middle Kingdom Egypt, how she started with NASA images and then went to the site the mages identified and using coring to go down to a level about 4000 years old, where pottery and evidence of an ancient jewelry shop were found.
