The Mueller Investigation: Timing is everything; we may have arrived at a pivotal time in U.S. history.

Yes this could be a pivotal time in U.S. history and it is imperative that Robert Mueller ends his investigation as soon as possible and presents whatever evidence he has gathered before the November midterm elections; and here's why:

This election is going to determine the direction that this country takes for some time going into the future. The Republican Party now has control over the presidency and both houses of Congress. If, in this election, the people of America decide to let them stay in power then that will greatly enhance Trump's chances of staying in office for a second term.

And if he is reelected that's when the trouble will start; and I would say that, from that time on, America will go into a new and highly dangerous direction. Think about what Trump has done since becoming president, his obvious obsession with power and control.

When Trump entered office there were many Republicans who were very much against him as he had said many derogatory things about the GOP and many of its members during the campaign. However, in a very short time, he has beaten most of them into submission and has turned them into his political tools. He has managed to take total control of the GOP and has, thereby, increased his power and control to new heights.

Anyone who has listened to the words coming out of his very active mouth has heard some disturbing, things that foretell of great danger to this nation's democracy in future years. I'm talking about the possibility that this president, by his behavior and actions, has clear intentions of establishing an autocracy/authoritarian government and is hard at work laying the groundwork to achieve that objective.

It did not take very long after he was elected before he launched a nasty ongoing war against various forms of the media. He continually talks about "fake news" and he has called journalists "sick people who don't like our country." Once he told someone in the media to just shut up.

TV and newspaper reporters at Trump campaigns have been physically abused; pushed, shoved, and one was body slammed. At some of his rallies he has whipped his audience into a near frenzy as he urged those in attendance to hurl insults at media representatives covering the event, just doing their jobs. He condones and even encourages this kind of violence against members of the media.

If Trump accumulates the power he will not hesitate to muzzle the free press and turn it into his personal media machine. All one needs to do is remember how, down through history, dictators have made the silencing and control of the free press one of the first, if not the first, actions in their plan to establish a dictatorship.

How about Trump dictating to the NFL that it must not allow football players to kneel during the playing of the National Anthem. He also has made statements about players such as "maybe they don't belong in this country." His intimidating tactics have resulted in the NFL management ruling that players cannot kneel during the playing of the National Anthem. We'll see what the players will do in response.

He has made one attempt after another to kill the Russian investigation, first by firing Jim Comey, the head of the FBI, then proclaiming that the Mueller investigation should not be allowed to continue. That's obstruction, that's using power to intimidate, to control, that's autocratic behavior.

He shows a disregard for laws, regarding them as irrelevant; he's denigrated judges who dared to rule against him. Trump believes that he is above the laws and he can alter them to fit his desires.

Then there is his current demand that the Justice Dept. investigate his charge that the FBI had placed a spy in his campaign. Any president is free to ask that the Justice Dept. or some other agency to conduct a specific investigation but when Trump demands and dictates that this must be done then he is exceeding his authority, Late last year, he said that "I have absolute right to do what I want to do with the Justice Department." That's an autocratic statement.

Trump's never ending tweets indicate that he is a control freak of the highest order. He does not hesitate to attack and insult anyone who dares to criticize or question anything he says or does. He wants them to stay in line and remain subservient; he wants total control.

We could go on and on with more examples of his obsession with control but the above examples paint a grim picture of what can happen to America's democracy if this man is allowed to be around for two full terms -- or as many as he desires f he becomes the head of an autocracy.

Trump is cunning, clever, deceitful and devious and he knows exactly how to proceed with transforming the American democracy into an autocracy. He must be stopped and Mueller holds the key to make certain that it does not happen

No, Trump is our greatest hope. His election offered hope to get away from pointless wars but that can't happen because the Deep State forbids it - and will take ANY action needed to stop him.

There is now only one way to stop the US from bullying the world - collapse. This is sad and unfortunate but there isn't any other way now. The chaos Trump is spreading will accelerate this.

This country, its government and society is in such a state of turmoil and chaos that it seems as if there is no way to bring it under control. You may be right about collapse and we'll see.

Michael, you are spot on. I have written often on the authoritarian trend in the USA. In fact, this was the reason for my now consuming interest in our Government. To me, it began in the Reagan term with it's "me first, to Hell with you" mentality. I could see fascism in our future as did Sinclair Lewis years before.
When Bush/Cheney screwed the middle class for the oligarchs, I thought their aim was full fascism and police state. Fortunately, that cabal ran out of time and Republicans were not up to speed to run a dictatorship. It was during this time when I could see where the USA was going and began writing my newsletter for friends and started following OpEdNews. Of course, I didn't see Trump, but some dictator in our future. I wrote about this and was quickly put down by readers. Even OpEdNews warned about using words like, "fascism, Third Reich, and Hitler. Thank goodness that warning is gone as I chose my words carefully and only those fit.
The "America first" and "the American exceptionalism" couldn't hide the status of education, healthcare, well being, poverty, killings, infrastructure, and wealth concentration which to me were bright red flags, but essentially ignored with those thinking the USA was infallible even though the USA was always rated lower than most first world countries.
What I see now is the Republican Party becoming the new Third Reich with individuals all thinking they will have a favored place in the inner circle. Trump will screw these fools too.
Right now is crucial because even with the investigations, and constant news Trump has not felt any consequences for his fascist ideas, He has just gained more power from each outrageous act where he is not held accountable which just exacerbates the next.
I have come to realize that our Constitution is deeply flawed. The writers always assumed that a President ultimately would in some way appreciate the rule of law. Even Nixon didn't leave much of a teaching moment. While the politics were different, at the totalitarian level there is no difference between communism, fascism or capitalism.
Our situation could quickly become a disaster akin to the days of the Weimar Republic during Hitler's ascent or the Bolshevik Revolution.
Trump is cornered and like a rabid animal will attack. He is a psychopath and has no sense of right and wrong, morality, empathy, guilt, or law. Trump will evade the Mueller interview; he will evade subpoenas. It will go to the Supreme Court. Some think this will settle the issue, but what if he refuses the order by SCOTUS assuming the conservative Court rules against him? Who will drag him from the White House? Trump has curried favor with the military, the police, and the white nationalists. Dictatorship is just one command away. He has the potential to make Hitler seem benign.

Republicans or Democrats: no difference and not worse than before - only more transparent. This blatant, in-your-face fascism can only mean they think they've passed the point of no return and there is nothing the 99% of Americans can do to stop them.

Do you think that 99% of Americans are up to doing anything at all to stop them. Do we see any evidence at all that the American people are banding together to see that this democracy is not going to be transformed into an autocracy? We are well on the road, probably 2/3 or more away from such a transformation but do the American people even realize that this is happening?

Mueller was once confronted as head of the FBI with the question as to why Osama Bin Laden was not on the FBI's most wanted list for his role in 911. Mueller said it's because they don't have evidence to convict. In other words, this paragon of law enforcement allows the country to engage in a murderous wild goose chase, rather than challenge the corrosive narrative that many people feel shows that the country has already crossed that authoritarian line.

Expecting Mueller to stand up and do the right thing is highly doubtful.

He is and always has been part of the problem. Trump for all his faults was right about the swamp.

Mueller, regardless of what may have happened in the past, may be our only hope in preventing the Sociopathic Party of American and Trump from establishing an authoritarian or fascistic government so I'm going to stay with him and see what he produces.

As far as Trump draining the swamp that's laughable. He didn't drain the swamp he just mind- conditioned the alligators, i.e., the Republicans and some Democrats to his devious way of thinking. He is now the master of the swamp, or the Deep State.

One more observation about Trump. This is the most repulsive, disgusting, deceitful, pathetic excuse for a politician that has ever appeared in this country. This is what is called the bottom of the barrel, operating in the gutter and a part of the dregs of society.

Please read the last paragraph of my reply to Eric. He is not smooth talking at all, he is not just boorish, he is the biggest pile of horse manure I have ever seen; in more rationalterms this is a man who has not the slightest understanding of the principles of ethics and morals, he is representative of the dregs of this society. He will go down as not just the worst president in US history, he will be labeled as the most ignorant about governing and knowledge of the Constitution and the dangerous one this nation has ever seen.

Who was president when Libya was destroyed and its leader sodomized with a bayonet? Who was president when Ukraine was destroyed? Who was president when Yemen went under attack? Who was president when Syria started being destroyed? (Hint: nickname Barry)

It was Barack Obama and I wrote any number of articles condemning every one of those illegal, misguided military actions.

Who was president when the nation and people of Iraq were invaded, attacked and nearly destroyed because Bush and Cheney wanted to invade this country and lied about WMD's? It was Bush and I wrote numerous articles condemning those illegal, immoral actions.

Now we have a president who is clearly a pathological liar of the highest degree, with tons of documentation to support that contention; one who is mentally unstable according to numerous respected psychiatrists, who is reckless and dangerous. And I'm going to keep writing and condemning his many dumb and destructive actions and try to have him removed before the starts the next illegal immoral war.

And what is that? Well, let's call it as looking as what has happened so many times by an American president and a massive aggressive foreign policy, learning the lessons of history and trying to help make sure it can be prevented in the future.
