Recently, a manatee was discovered, in Flordia, with the letters T R U M P marked in large letters on its body

There is a $5000 reward for finding the perpetrator of what is a federal offense, since Manatees are protected.

Apparently, the manatee was not seriously injured because the letters were inscribed in the algae on the manatee.

Thank goodness for that. But one has to wonder what the perpetrators put the manatee through.

My question is what should the punishment be for the perpetrator or perpetrators?

And how can they be found?

Let them be prosecuted lawfully under the applicable law, but let them also be tried in the Court of Public opinion. These cowards traumatized a wild animal to carry their message. It would seem fitting to instruct them on how that feels.

Horrifying. And isn't it interesting to contemplate the opposite - for instance, you'd never see an endangered species labeled with "Bernie." I suspect whoever did this will be found, because it seems like the kinds of people who do this stuff also look for notoriety...I'd be surprised if the perpetrator did not post a photo to facebook to claim being the genius who did this!

I believe this act is a felony, and hopefully will be punished to the full extent of the law - I'm counting on animal rights activists to make sure of that!

Feeding, harassing or otherwise disturbing a threatened species like a Manatee is a federal crime.

The USFWS is asking for information on whoever did this, and they will be prosecuted.

On a personal level, this offends me greatly.

I had the opportunity to travel to Key West just before the lockdown. My wife and I were lucky enough to come upon a Manatee and her calf grazing near a pier one relatively quiet evening. They kept us company for 20 minutes. They were close enough, and slow enough, to reach out and touch. But I didn't. I was content enough to leave them alone and just watch. It is one of our fondest memories.

I can't imagine what goes through the mind of someone who wants to use them as a living billboard for something they can't understand. But then I've never understood the mind of a Trumpist either.

Thanks. It was special...until hooting and hollering children and their families came onto the pier and scared them off.

In addition to a 1 year jail sentence and a $50,000 fine, the Center for Biological Diversity is offering a $5,000 reward for anyone coming forward with information on the perpetrator. Let's hope this dissuades anyone else from doing such a foolish, egotistical, act.
