Bernie was right about a lot of things, but one thing in particular -- we must elect Hillary! Being a long-term Progressive/Democratic Socialist/Humanist/Bright, I certainly didn't come to that conclusion easily and I'm not switching my affiliation for the reason(s) that one might suppose. It simply boils down to a matter of time, as the degradation of our country, indeed the world, will occur more rapidly under a Trump presidency than one under Clinton.
So, what could a four year Clinton presidency provide? Well, it could give those of us who are still sane, enough time to organize and be prepared to "clean house" in the mid-terms and after Hillary's first term expires. What am I talking about when I talk about, "cleaning house?" Well, it seems obvious, to me, that whenever faced with an ongoing serious problem one should seek out and address the problem at its source. In the US, if we want to discover the political source of our problems, we should take a lesson from the military and start at the lowest levels and follow the chain of command up to the highest levels, or, in other words, the source.
If we start at the entry level of our political chain, we find the voter and their initial interface with the government in the voting booth. This would be problem area one, as our voting systems are corrupt and badly in need of re-structuring. [Note, as I walk through this chain of command and mention problem areas, I'm not fixating on fixing them, at this point in time, since I'm an advocate for simultaneously, and in synchronicity, "repairing" our system(s) from both the bottom up and the top down.]
Next, the citizen/voter attempts to express his/her political preferences by selecting (too often through a rigged system) local as well as national representatives/senators and a president. The vast majority of these public officials are powerfully influenced by election funds that are provided by wealthy individuals, lobbyist, organizations, unions, corporations, etc. Most of these funding techniques are hidden from public view through a corrupt system of PACs (Political Action Committees) which is buttressed by the Citizens United court case. Additionally, the majority of the funds are funneled through the main stream media, which too often acts as a biased propaganda agent for those with the most money to spend.
The outline I'm describing here, is an overview of a totally out of control political system that is catering to a form of immoral and far-reaching greed that has historically never been seen before. I use the term "immoral" because that is one of the primary characteristics of both a sociopath and a modern corporation. In fact, today's favorite tool of the monetarily and politically oriented sociopath is the corporation -- because of its' legally protected ability to be immoral and lack any empathy while also being legally mandated to express greed through ever increasing profits.
Unlike today -- where corporations, run by psycho/sociopaths, control everything from our political systems to our courts, our military, our media, our educational systems, our legal systems, our medical systems, etc. -- for the first hundred years of our young country's existence, corporations were severely controlled. Here is a partial list of some of the regulations that were imposed on corporations up until 1886:
-
Corporate charters (licenses to exist) were granted for a limited time and could be revoked promptly for violating laws.
-
Corporations could engage only in activities necessary to fulfill their chartered purpose.
-
Corporations could not own stock in other corporations nor own any property that was not essential to fulfilling their chartered purpose.
-
Corporations were often terminated if they exceeded their authority or caused public harm.
