Hello to all my Facebook friends. I am rather new to playing in the Facebook zone and have found it very refreshing to be able to connect with so many of you. However, due to the political season we have entered, I find my page inundated with ugly, hateful and often ill-informed propaganda postings that go way beyond slander. The vast majority target President Obama and a few are aimed at his GOP rival. Some target our average fellow citizens and portray them as stupid or anti-American because of how they vote. Just so you know, I am not a supporter of either the Democrat or Republican Party. I will not be voting for either of their candidates in this election. Some berate me and say I should vote for the "lesser of the two evils." I have coined a phrase that expresses my feelings about this..."Obomney or Robama, six of one and six six six of the other." I'm not biting.
Politics is an ugly business, and, like all business, it's about money--BIG money. I find it very disheartening that Americans are so easily divided by shallow, hateful political ideology and have obviously forgotten that we are all citizens of the same great country, sharing the same freedoms, privileges and responsibilities. The people who sell us the candidates are paid a lot of money to demonize the opposition and make their own guy look like the Savior. Neither are the Savior, nor do either of them politically represent His Kingdom. Most objective observers from foreign lands do not see a gnat's eyelash worth of difference between the two parties or the people who run them. I don't either.
There are plenty of legitimate criticisms to be made against the policies and positions of President Obama and his opponent without resorting to the kind of outlandish and distorted comments I see appearing on my wall. I am old enough to remember Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush and now Obama. I have, at times, doubted the nation would survive the presidency of some of those guys, but we have survived because of what they and we all share in common--our love of America. Conservatives and liberals are not so different when it comes to defending our democracy and the freedoms we hold dear. Arlington cemetery does not divide the dead according to political ideology--some buried on the right and some on the left. They fought side by side under the same flag for all of us. We dishonor their sacrifice when we abuse our freedom of speech with useless insults.
No president has the singular power to destroy America, or it would have already happened. The only thing that will kill America is the poison of hate and division that is currently being fed to us by politicians, biased media and one another. So, here's the deal. Please carefully examine the accuracy of the facts in your comments and the spirit you offer them in before posting something that will appear on my wall. Hide your hateful comments from me or unfriend me on Facebook, but not in real life. I love you all and pray we all guard our hearts in this horrible political season that is upon us. There is a drought of decency in the land. God bless America and all of you.
I welcome your comments and will be happy to engage political, cultural and spiritual topics in civil conversation or debate. Peace!
