Happy New Year!

What's that mean to you? What resolutions have you made. What was special or awful about last year. And now, we're in a new decade. What was significant about this past decade? What do you hope to accomplish in this decade. At 68 I hope to last until the end of it.

What are your thoughts?

Let's ban the word "woke", because the people who use it aren't. The 'American' people will sleep for another decade. Wake them up for the revolution in 2030.

I'd ban it for the simple reason that it's used as a weapon by the deluded. But in the meantime, it does provide for some humorous mockery. In that way it may become self-banning.

We are NOT in a new decade. The new decade will start at midnight on Jan 1, 2021. 2020 is the last year of the second decade of the third millennium just a Jan 1, 10 was the last year of the first decade of the first millennium...

It is an interesting brain teaser, but---Sorry Rob. The Gregorian calendar never had a year zero.

Not all is lost, though. The Hebrews, Chinese, Aztecs and other civilizations figured it out 5,000 years ago.

Right. His brain teaser assumes a year zero, which never existed. It's fine to count 0-9.9 as "first decade", 10-19.99 as "second decade", etc. but that assumes you're starting at 0.

Another brain teaser is to think about what year it was one day before the day Jesus was born, which according to legend (and only that) was in 1 A.D. The concept of zero did not exist at that time in what came to be known as "western civilization". Other civilizations seem to have invented it sooner.

Near the beginning of "Kings Row" they are celebrating, I think, the beginning of 1900. Someone writes "Happy New Year" and Ronald Reagan crosses it out and says "No, dummy! Happy new century!". If it was good enough for the god Reagan it's good enough for me.

Welcome to the roaring 20s. 2020 does have an interesting ring to it too me. 40 years since Lennon got killed at age 40 born in 1940. Makes me wonder of being 62, 60 years since the sixties. Govts have to start serving the people soon to create more domestic tranquility, which seems like a goal of the founders.

I think it's a good time to reflect on the fact that there is more to life than swampy politics. Embrace the people and things that are dear to you. They won't be around forever, and neither will we.

As for clarity of vision: for me personally, this past decades brought surgery for retinal detachments in both eyes, one 100% successful, the other less than 100%. I'm hoping the coming decade brings no further threats to mine.

Last year, I made a huge effort to improve the Green New Deal, but I think that the agenda was set before the "consultations" designed to create "buy-in" for those inclined to join. Then, I had to race the weather to fix my storm-damaged house, which told me that at 71, I can still tackle big projects. However, it does look like a good time to be old. I've been fighting for oil conservation since '77, and only have prizes to show for it. Now, we are all trapped on a runaway train, wondering what we can build for brakes, if we can even get a budget for them. I wonder if planets need one more "Cinderella Factor" to survive technology - a dominant species that never develops economic inequality due to some genetic inhibition. The rich certainly treat us like domestic animals, and everything as theirs. Then, they somehow become role models, or otherwise tolerated, instead of despised and shunned. Yet, with all their power, they provide no wisdom, having only blind greed. I expect this to be my last decade of service, and I'm hoping for some Berlin Wall-like breakthrough to give it direction and hope. Until then, I'd most enjoy building another prototype vehicle that weighs less than it's payload, and it might make useful news, but there are a dozen other fronts I'd like to give equal attention to. Since it is so hard to even give away million-dollar technical ideas, I think that psychology is the most neglected science now.

Reminds me of a few lines from the Document, "Silent Weapons for Quiet Wars:"

Media: Keep the adult public attention diverted away from the real social issues, and captivated by matters of no real importance.

Schools: Keep the young public ignorant of real mathematics, real economics, real law, and real history.

Entertainment: Keep the public entertainment below a sixth-grade level.

Work: Keep the public busy, busy, busy, with no time to think; back on the farm with the other animals.

we are screwed for sure. but that doesn't mean we should just give up and stop trying to make the world a better place than we found it, even if it does feel hopeless. effort counts for a lot!

Thanks for this thread. Happy New Year to all OpEdNews members.

There are at least three New Years: Christians, Far Eastern New Year (soon) and Persian New year (March 21).

I wish to be healthy to pay my bills and taxes.

I wish Western illegal sanctions and bombings on weaker countries will stop.

My wish list is long, there are many things which I wish they would happen.

I would like to save the environment and creatures in it. I am close to the end of my life, so I would like my last few years to be peaceful.

To be honest, what I see for the new decade is that it will be a decade of torment.

I understand the new decade does not really start until a year from now. But, it just seems right to call today the start of the decade of the 2020's. If we use today as the start of the decade and not 1-1/2021, then the last year of the decade won't end in "30," which just does not sound right.

My fondest hope is for more truth and honesty. That would improve respect for all and help us become more grateful and less fearful. It may be a faint hope, but I think it would greatly weaken the damaging catastrophism afflicting many.

Great times ahead! After being pessimistic about our collective future for a long time, I see much positive change all around us. The MSM tries to sell you fear and loathing, but that is because the plans of their evil criminal cabal masters are unraveling. That same cabal that took out JFK and did 9/11, and that keeps the masses dumb-downed and distracted, is losing their power. People are waking up. They no longer trust the MSM propaganda and are beginning to realize that we've been enslaved by powerful hidden forces. The cabal is going to have a bad 2020 (when our 20/20 vision returns) and those 140,000 sealed federal indictments start getting served. I can't wait to see Comey, Brennan, McCabe, Bush, Clinton, and Obama face justice. But I think to first high level arrest is going to wake up even the conditioned liberal lemmings. My prediction for 2020: Mike Pence is arrested for being leaker and involved in a plot to assassinate Trump. And Trumps new running mate will be someone even DEMs can't hate. Pie in the sky? We'll see won't we. Truth Will Prevail in 2020!

Yes, after 9/11, the 21st Century's course was set for the United States and the American people, who somehow became immediately suspected of some wrongdoing by a 'revenge crazed' president and a 'compliant' congress - W Bush proudly signs his Patriot Act "eviscerating America's Civil Liberties" and he starts lying about Iraq to gain the support of congress and the American people to launch an unprovoked war of aggression on Iraq. Who was really responsible for 9/11 ("explosives were used say commissioners") has not yet been determined or investigated by our law enforcement officials or our duly elected or appointed representatives.

Funny how Sanders, Warren & Gabbard were MIA when the Patriot Act was renewed recently. Only Klobuchar voted NAY.

And all four of them were MIA when the most recent version of the NDAA was voted on.

If anything, these candidates should have done everything to be there for the votes and show they had our backs in regards to two of the most liberty destroying pieces of legislation.

Thanks, Lance. I appreciate your posts and detailed understanding of the 9/11 Hoax and the many lies and crimes surrounding it. The 9/11 false flag event, and more importantly, the subsequent cover-up is what woke me up (many years ago now). I used to consider myself a liberal DEM and thought it was the Bush crime family and war-monger republicans that held the most responsibility for these war crimes; but of course, now I realize it was perpetrated by the Deep State (DS) which cuts across party lines. But I have often wondered why more good people in the military and government haven't spoken out or done anything about such an obvious traitorous crime (beyond the heroes like Cynthia McKinney, Bob Bowman, and Mike Gravel). The obvious answer is that the DS is too powerful to oppose. But here is the good news... There have been patriots working behind the scenes (for decades) to root out this evil. And they are going to win and redeem our world. Hard to believe, but true. Grab your popcorn and enjoy the show.

From year 2000 (the beginning in almost everyone's mind of the new millenium), things have gotten worse. Bush's election, and especially his re-election in 2004, were disastrous. The glimmer of hope that I saw in 2008 was quickly extinguished by Obama's sellouts, compromises, and wimpiness (except when he was fighting progressives). The year 2016 was a total disaster for democracy, for the country, and for the world.

Trump has a good chance of being re-elected-- a terrifying thought, given his obvious corruption, racism and unsuitability for the office. We're due for a recession, which the next president will probably get blamed for. The U.S. imperial state is on decline. Due to debt and mismanagement, things will get worse. Climate change will cause immense suffering and chaos.

No matter who wins the presidency in 2020, I predict social unrest. It's hard to be optimistic that Bernie or Warren can win, because the plutocrats will spend billions of dollars to defeat them. A centrist Dem would be better than Trump but would not fight the plutocracy or the war machine.

BTW, too many comments were wasted on the silly question whether the decade starts on 2020/01/01 or on 2021/01/01. I say 2020/01/01, even though I'm a computer scientist for whom the natural numbers begin at zero.

But the calendars don't. Year zero sounds pretty stupid, doesn't it?

being "right" - even when you are right - and then calling different beliefs ("right" or "wrong") stupid, seems pretty stupid and mean-spirited to me. Who cares?! Stop wasting comments on something where it makes No Difference who is right - what a waste o'time and energy when there are so many pressing issues.

But here's an interesting paradoxical question: if a "new" decade begins on the last night of a year ending in zero, say ... why, then, if a person turns 60 years old, they are considered in their 61st year? I know it's not a calendar but it's math and it doesn't make sense if it followed the same logic as calendar decade changes.

It seems that anything humans "invent" will always be up for debate because it, and life, are fraught with paradox and contradiction. Which is why being "right" is... stupid!

My wish for 2020 is that it no longer matters who's right - that peace and justice - including environmental justice - matters more than that.

Year zero is an arbitrary thing and this conversation is what is pretty stupid. I've always been an anti-authoritarian, and even if the Gregorian or any other calendars say that the decade starts next year, I think they are stupid. The 20s start in 2020, in 1920, etc. And BTW, create a bio. It's ten years. You're due.

Not only that, the whole concept of counting decades is an arbitrary function of how many fingers humans have.

Good observations. Computer scientists often do away with this quirk of ordinal numbers by numbering arrays starting at 0, etc. When you give it serious thought, calling the time now the 21st century and the third millennium and, starting with 2021, the third decade of the twenty-first century, makes perfect sense. Practically speaking, that observation plus $2.75 will get you on the NYC subway system. Debating about which is "right", as humankind proceeds apace to end the American democratic republic experiment, and the suitability of our planet to support human life, is akin to fiddling while Rome burns.

My wish for the next decade even if 2020 is not technically the start of it is for the current trend of people all over the world hitting the streets to confront the crime of austerity, to finally reach the US. This is vitally important as this is the belly of the beast of global empire. The only way to turn things around is to make life impossible for the ruling class.

It's time.

Been dreaming of that since hearing Arlo's Someday album about people all over the world taking the day off to watch the children play for more than just a day to break the rules of people running around like a universe of fools. Pu this me DJ of an Arlo song together back in winter of 2011.
