What are your thoughts after both nights of Democratic Presidential Primary Debates?

CNN seems to think that Biden bombed and put the Congressional Black Caucus in a very uncomfortable position of having to defend his stand advocating for states rights.

Kamala Harris definitely did very well. So did Bernie Sanders.

I offer my take in this video

I missed last night's debate but sae saw tonight's ..and my reception wasn't great so it blinked out on me a few times...

I had not seen all of these folks before...

I think Kamala was strong and focused, and Kirsten Gillibrand too, I liked both of them better after the debate than I did before...

Pete Buttigieg had some good moments, but gosh, no charisma, it's hard for me to like him...

I agree with CBS, that I think Biden did a nose dive, and that's fine with me.

I think Marianne Williamson put forth some good points that people will think about. One of the best words of the evening was when she said "If you forcibly take a child from a parent's arms, that's kidnapping. This is collective child abuse. These are state-sponsored crimes." She's absolutely right. She's clearly not used to wrestling in the muck, some people would say that is not political enough, I am thinking seems like a plus.

Bernie did great but disappointed me at the end, I wish he would have had a more positive spin at the end, he didn't and wow, was that depressing.

Everyone offered good food for thought, I'd be happy to see almost any of them in significant roles in DC...

I saw most of both debates and thought the moderators did a pretty good at job at revealing and contrasting the candidates positions. Some are much better communicators than others and seem less scripted. A few seemed a bit nervous and that's okay.

When the subject of public investments (e.g. 'universal health care) came up, a inevitable, recurring question was 'but how are you going to pay for it?' They all had answers, but most conceded the point that the money had to come from somewhere - other than the obvious: Congressional Appropriations.

Only Bernie Sanders responded with at least some sense of indignation that the solution is a matter of political will. Paraphrasing: If the money has to "come from somewhere,
then it makes sense that you have to get it from the people who have it i.e. "Wall Street".

Thank you. I wish the public health care / financial crisis was treated like an actual priority, but until then, a sales tax on stock trades will do.

I would like to see a more civilized way of keeping contestants to their time than the current shouting match. Sheesh.

I propose that when a moderator says (perhaps a 2nd or 3rd warning) "you have 15/30/whatever more seconds" that they push a button that mutes the mic in that amount of time. In fact, that would be a good way to get them to put the most important info up front...when the contestants are given 60 secs, they also see a counter...visible to all, and when that counter gets to 0, the mike goes off.

And I would then give all contestants the same time to answer the same question, otherwise it's not really a "debate", is it? For instance instead of saying " we will go down the line, you have 2 words to answer this question..." which NO ONE heeded, the moderator can say " you have 30 seconds to address this topic"...when the mike goes silent, the next person has the opportunity. Lots of time saved for hearing more of the positions, and no more shouting over each other which imo is not only uncivillizzed, it is totally ineffective and a misuse of precious moments.

And I call "no fair" for different contestants to receive different amounts of time to speak in these debates. So alternatively - or maybe somehow done along with this mike muting concept...the amount of time each contestant has spoken should be calculated before the final moments of the debate...then at the end of the debate, they are each given the amount of time for their summary that evens the amount of time up for everyone. So if anyone went over their time in previous questions, they get less time at the end. That in itself would assist in self regulating because all of them would be wanting to save time for their summary.

Democrats Go At It: Debate Report Card

.laprogressive.com/democrats-debate/

Interesting coverage on the Debate in the Los Angeles Progressive in which Dr. Peter Dreier gave each participant a grade for their performance. Very glad to read this article from Dr. Dreier at my own alma mater, Occidental College.

Harris did well and so did Bernie. Harris story and a few quips here and there will boost her numbers nationwide, I am sure. She HAD to perform well and she HAD to perform credibly.

I agree with many of fine tuned grades and overall assessments, and I encourage more of this grading analysis as the coverage drones on.

Please do remember the connection between Occidental and the White House, with Obama having gone to Occidental for two years before leaving (largely because the administration at that time didn't want him discussing his theories on how to end apartheid, by pulling investments out of gold, diamonds and de Beers).

That chain of events was covered many times and in many ways. One of the more memorable articles:

Occidental recalls 'Barry' Obama LA Times

I support and will continue to support Bernie Sanders all the way

I worked 1200 hours on Beto's US Senate campaign against Cruz; I wouldn't underestimate his ground support based on one short debate, However. I will say that If Beto had taken my advice about harvesting the power of the editorial pages of Texas, he would have easily won. His staff just didn't get it, and said things to me like, "Only Beto can write opinion/editorials." This whole strategy was clearly laid out in a LA Progressive article long ago dated January 1, 2018:

Small Newspapers Could Have Huge Impact on Beto O'Rourke-Ted "
https://www.laprogressive.com/beto-orourke/

The identical counsel could help any candidate running at any level, by asking their supporters to early on register their support on the editorial pages in their region and their state, but not many seem to be listening. It is as if many would altogether ignore Editorial pages, because suddenly they no longer have any power to convince fence sitters and non-voters, which is indeed completely absurd.

I do think Beto's long history re: immigration carries much more credibility and impact than could be discerned in this short debate. It is the ideas and the solutions that are vital, not the popularity spin of the candidate. Beto has been hammering for solutions on this issue longer than all of the other candidates, I maintain. He should be listened to in that context, because he knows the problems and because I trust his solutions.

These "debates" are a waste of time. There is a reason why we have 20 candidates for POTUS, and it's not because Trump is so horrible. When the moguls of the DNC fear that their economic honey pot is in danger of being overturned, they flood the election with conservative candidates so that the progressive point of view is drowned in the mainstream of centrist and right wing blather. Divide and conquer. Pardon me while I grab my barf bag.

All the democrat presidential contenders were confident about everything they said and were quite certain they could "get everything done", always adding "together" we can "do this", "we" can, and "I' can, and "we must" of course - not one had mentioned how they will get anything accomplished with Republican stalwart Senator Mitch McConnell running a majority (never vote on any Democrat proposal or nomination) or minority (threaten to filibuster every Democrats put forward) controlled senate 117th-118th congress. McConnell of course stands ready to block all/every Democrat initiative(s)/nomination(s), and if the House goes Republican in 2020 (Pelosi refuses to impeach Trump like she did for W Bush) a lone Democrat President, no matter if that was Superman/Superwoman "in person" would be able to keep even one promise or even with super strength overpower the Republican opposition/obstructionist Party.

Fact: Every year, Americans pay $18.5 BILLION to subsidize healthcare for just 3.9 illegal aliens

Every 2020 Democrat wants you to have to pay for healthcare for ALL illegal aliens

For 11 to 22 million illegal aliens, the price tag for taxpayers is in the TRILLIONS

What utter nonsense.

If you want to talk bout wasted money here's a start. A report that detailed up to $1 billion in wasted federal funds on bad charter schools may have underestimated the problem

... of course, people know nothing of the grand theft that is destroying our schools

You must have meant $18.5 Billion for not 3.9 illegal aliens, but 3.9 Million illegal aliens. But then you said, for 11 to 22 million illegal aliens the price tag would be "in the TRILLIONS."

To use round numbers I will use 4 million illegal aliens vs 3.9 million. So it would be about 2.5 times that for 10 million and 5 times that for 20 million illegal aliens. Using $20 Billion for the 4 million illegal aliens, that comes out to ~$50 Billion for 10 million illegal aliens and ~$100 Billion for 20 million illegal aliens. That is not in "the TRILLIONS!" I think you lost track of your decimal point.

Ms Nan, you don't like us spending any healthcare money on illegal aliens. Fine.

But you do understand corporations like the cheap labor. Because the labor is so cheap, corporation profits go way up. Wouldn't it follow then that the corporations that make lots of money off of cheap illegal-alien labor should be taxed more to help pay for healthcare for the illegal aliens they like being here and they employ? That way, it wouldn't cost the rest of us so much.

Now, let's talk about the real money. Trillions of dollars have and are being spent on wars half way around the world. When I talk of those trillions of dollars I like to point out that those trillions of dollars are for undeclared, illegal wars, based on lies.

I am guessing it bothers you that a few people take advantage of things like welfare and food stamps. Fine.

Does it bother you that big Corporations take advantage of our tax system to avoid paying a lot of taxes? What about the many trillions of dollars that seem to disappear and cannot be accounted for? And what do you think of the TRILLIONS of dollars we spend on undeclared, illegal wars, based on lies, halfway around the world where we have killed and maimed millions of men, women, children and also, unborn fetuses too? Does that bother you? If you have not noticed, that is where the real money is.

That was a merciless surprise attack on Biden by Kamala Harris. I think it could have been done using a more subtle approach. It was uncomfortable to watch and seemed unfair in such a tight, structured setting, even if the facts were true.
