The coasts also have the a vastly disproportionate part of the population, between the two of them, and therefore delegates in presidential elections. By routing Hillary Clinton in Washington State by nearly three-fourths of the vote, Sanders shows he has chops in the liberal west coast, stretching from San Diego to Seattle, and could easily mop up delegates toward the end of the season to slide into home base in a stunning upset. It will not be easy, but Sanders never said it would.
The significance of Washington was not whether Bernie would win or lose, but by how much. The scale of his win there, and an even bigger one in Alaska (80%) means Sanders is solidly in the game. Moreover, the pattern he has established of closing polling gaps fast and outperforming in states he is expected to win, as well as fighting to a near-draw in states where he is not, could make this a nail-biting election season.
Polls showed Sanders winning in Utah, but only by about 5%. Instead, Sanders' trajectory overshot Hillary's like an F-16 jet fighter closing in on a 767, and he took Utah by a blowout of 80%.
Energized and motivated Sanders workers have every reason to double down. As the Internet, if not the major media, wakes Democratic voters up the fact that Sanders beats Trump soundly in nearly every poll, while Trump is closing in on Hillary, the curtain which portrays Hillary as the presumptive nominee might be finally yanked aside.
