For Trump, all those prior flirtations with running -- in 1988, 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012 -- might be viewed as part of his apprenticeship for his first actually declared presidential candidacy this time around. But either way, each decision he's made about running has certainly been based on business rather than political considerations, or even patriotism. While Trump's critics might consider it just another of his dark ventures in crass capitalism presented in a glitzy showcase, his supporters likely view his political maneuvering as another shining example of how the art of the deal is properly executed.
In 2011 for example, many held the view that Trump expressed the idea of a potential presidential run simply to promote The Apprentice, which was up for renewal at the time. If so, it apparently worked. The show was renewed. Therefore, considering how effective his prior announcements of a potential candidacy have been in helping him maintain his brand's relevancy, it should have come as no surprise that Trump would do it again.
However, having mulled jumping into a series of prior presidential contests before eventually making a series of the smartest business decisions he's ever made -- to jump out of those races -- Trump realized that he could no longer milk the, "I'm considering running" cow. At some point he'd have to either sh*t or get off the pot as it's said. So this time why not go ahead and take that dump? After all, it never hurts for a businessman to have "presidential candidate" as part of his portfolio.
Or does it?
