Damage at the crack origin was consistent with this explosion mechanism, where The NTSB provided a detailed material failure analysis and concluded that the pipeline crack originated at the outer surface of the pipeline (Figure 7). I agree with this specific conclusion. The pipeline opened like a clamshell to create the largest explosion stresses at the outer wall of the ripping apart pipeline, where the failure stresses were predominantly bending stresses rather than hoop stresses.
