Lockyer, as an avid student of history, descended from British-Scottish ancestors, undoubtedly knows the famous reflection of the eloquent Englishman with the bulldog face who, after waiting 67 years " just about Lockyer's age " was finally given the chance to lead his nation-state at its darkest moment of national emergency.
"I felt , Winston Churchill recalled, "as if I were walking with destiny, and that all my past life had been but a preparation for this hour and for this trial.
As my kid would say, LOL. Lockyer is no Churchill. And the very existence of California is not at stake. Or is it?
For nearly two centuries, California has been an idea and an ideal, a dream. That dream is now threatened by political and economic crisis.
I've asked for a lot of deep thinking by people who care about this State. Now I ask it from Lockyer himself.
I hope my old friend will again think hard and long about what he felt not so long ago " that his whole adult life, over forty years of politics and public service, has been "but a preparation for this hour and for this trial.
Among California's millions, there are scores of intelligent and talented men and women who might ably serve this State as Governor.
But not at this moment.
To confront and overcome this Emergency and then set an entirely new course for the State in coming decades demands a unique combination of experience, qualification and talent.
At just this moment in time, to meet just this crisis, we have a chance next year to select the right person, the best person, for a god-awful job.
Lockyer for Governor.
