Being a participant in the Mid-Maine Timebank in the USA, I can say it works the same way here. For example, the Mid-Maine Timebank has been extremely helpful to my wife, and me. They have helped us get the house ready to put on the market during times that my Crohn's (inflammation of the bowels) was acting up.
Meanwhile, my wife, a retired teacher, can earn time-dollars for doing what she loves, educating children and helping them master what they are learning in public schools. Having a PhD in English, she also edits what people write, for time dollars. I should add we will earn time dollars in writing these articles. All of this is in service to the community, in accord to Timebank's mission and passion.
In essence, Timebank frees us up to do things that are important while allowing us to not worry over how much is in our bank accounts. It also provides transportation now that my wife and I do not have a car. While we may hand over a few bucks for gas, the drive itself is in time-dollars. A blossoming friendship between giver and receiver is the bonus no monetary transaction can ever offer.
