Shantel Phelps's son, Timmie, started with Coach J when he was in third grade. He had never played football before. Coach J, Shantel reports, "took his time." He taught the boys "respect, to respect themselves and others. That education is the key to everything. He was a godsend for a lot of moms who didn't have male figures." Shantel confirms that the NORD recreational program often failed to supply the basics. Coach J would reach into his own pocket for football socks, cleats, shoulder pads and even jerseys. Having Coach J was an "exceptional experience" all the more so because Jermaine doesn't have a son himself.
Timmie is now 18. He still has a close relationship with Coach J, although he no longer lives nearby [the family relocated to Gonzales, LA, after Katrina]. Shantel says, "To this day, I'm blessed. My son hasn't been in jail; he hasn't been in trouble. I'm thankful." When I asked her if she had anything to add she said, "Thank God for Coach J! We need many more like him."
And to that I say, "Amen."
