But the great divide that emerged in American culture in the 1960s and 1970s has produced our well-known culture war(s). As a result of the 2016 election, the Republicans will now control the White House and both houses of the Congress as well many state governorships, starting in mid-January 2017.

As a result, the time has come for liberals and progressives to take heart from the recent victory of the Chicago Cubs in the World Series -- persistence can also pay off for liberals and progressives in fighting the good fight against the conservatives in American culture.

In conclusion, I am in favor of the peaceful transfer of power to President-elect Trump.

Thomas James Farrell is professor emeritus of writing studies at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). He started teaching at UMD in Fall 1987, and he retired from UMD at the end of May 2009. He was born in 1944. He holds three degrees from Saint Louis University (SLU): B.A. in English, 1966; M.A.(T) in English 1968; Ph.D.in higher education, 1974. On May 16, 1969, the editors of the SLU student newspaper named him Man of the Year, an honor customarily conferred on an administrator or a faculty member, not on a graduate student -- nor on a woman up to that time.
