Prime Minister Netanyahu recently was reported to have stated that "A Palestinian state could be achieved only through a peace agreement with Israel." Who appointed him as head of the United Nations? He may be able to manipulate the U.S. government at will but he has no power whatsoever over the nations of the world. When he and Mr. Obama say that Palestine cannot legitimately gain statehood through the UN they are entirely wrong; that is the official way and the only way.
President Obama has already said that he is ready to wield his veto in the Security Council to block the Palestinian request for statehood; what extreme hypocrisy in light of the fact that he has even recently stated that the Palestinians deserve statehood. The difference in his positions is, quite obviously, the fact that the Israeli government is against this process in the UN and Mr. Obama is, yet again, caving in to their dictates.
It would be such a great thing for the people of Israel and America if the governments of these two nations would somehow wake up to the fact that their tired old agendas are out of date and out of sync with the vast majority of the nations of the world; that they would realize that a new day has dawned in the Middle East, that the world is changing, and that they need to become a part of a new era of diplomacy and cooperation.
Right now Israel and the U.S. are still in full control of this statehood process because the U.S. wields the power of its ever ready veto in the Security Council. But the day is coming when the power of the majority of the nations of the world will prevail and bring true justice to this grievous situation.
