Public options have been tried in several states, including TennCare in Tennessee, MinnesotaCare in Minnesota, and Dirigo Health in Maine. You've never heard of them because they were not game-changers. They did not control costs, nor lead to universal access.
The only reason public option is on the table is because politicians are being deluged with calls for single-payer. Even if I thought public option was the solution (which I don't think) I would still say that advocating for single payer was the way to go.
Thank you so much, Dr. Woolhandler. I really appreciate your squeezing this into your busy schedule. It was a pleasure working with you.
