"Because that might very well drive the cost of labor way up, and all the employers whose businesses produce the relatively superfluous goods and services that most all of us love so much would then have to pay a whole lot more for the labor they hire, and as a result, the price of everything would go way up for all consumers who are still on "the hyperproduction, hyperconsumption treadmill."
