Nancy Pelosi believes that the continual procession of corrupt Bush appointees and actions will erode the support for Republicans and insure a 2008 victory.
At some point, the rotting, fulminating pustule that is the Bush presidency will be so ripe with contemptuously politically malodorous puss, that the time will be ripe to pierce it with impeachment. If Republican senators defend Bush, then they will be defending the worst, most anti-american, anti-democracy, corrupt practices in the history of the United states (that is part of the job of the DNC-- to get this covered and echoed in the media.)
Ultimately, there will come a time, as it happened when Goldwater led a group of senators to Nixon, when sixteen or seventeen Republicans will take "THE WALK" to Bush's office. They will tell him they are ready to impeach him, but that they prefer he resign. That will be the time when the Democrats in the senate will have to struggle. The Republicans will offer a deal-- a Bush resignation with a new Republican vice president and president. They will ask to have one of the lead presidential candidates for the two positions. The Democrats will not allow that, since it verges upon election suicide. They will insist upon a temporary placeholder, with minimal power, who will not be a candidate. They may even insist on a Democratic vice president. But the best move would be to keep impeachment on the table, to force the American people to see more and more of the dirty laundry of the Bush administration and the Republicans who continue to support him. One by one, if the Dems hold Bush to the fire, there will be Republicans who will jump the aisle to save their jobs as the outrage builds.
The only patriotic way to handle the crimes of Bush and Cheney-- and be assured, they are severe crimes-- is to prosecute them and punish them. The prosecution of Cheney can be delayed and done after Bush is removed. But both Bush and Cheney must ultimately face indictment, incarceration and the indelible writing of black marks on their roles in the history of this planet and the human race. They must go down in history as among the worst of the worst. No less will serve the future of America in a just, adequate way.
