But for all the generals, the officers, the conservative politicians and pundits that have spoken out loudly and at length in criticizing this war, and this White House, it is, as always, the voice of the common soldier that cries out the clearest the harm being done to this nation's proud and honorable military tradition. I leave you with the words of Marine Staff Sgt. Russell Slay to his five year old son Walker, "Be studious, stay in school, and stay away from the military. I mean it!" Walker's father Russell was killed in action days after sending his son these words in November of 2004. The death toll that month of that year was nearing 1275 soldiers KIA. Today it exceeds 2669 soldiers killed, and 600 civilian support workers dead. We have suffered over 19,910 soldiers maimed and wounded. There are over 46,318 Iraqi dead. We have spent over $320,000,000.00. Our military projects that a substantial U.S. presence will be required for the next 15 years in Iraq, short of a change in military objectives.
It is time for change
