THIRTY-THREE ARRESTED PROTESTING WAR AS PART OF ‘MOTHER OF A MARCH’; SUMMER OF ACTION BEGINS – SWARM ON CONGRESS TO LAST TO JULY 31After rallying in Lafayette Park across the street from the White House more than 250 anti-war advocates marched through Washington, DC to Capitol Hill. When they reached the Cannon House Office Building they formed two circles blocking the street to all traffic. The demonstration was the “Mother of a March” spearheaded by Cindy Sheehan whose son died in Iraq. The march kicked off a “Summer of Action” where anti-war demonstrators will SWARM on Congress from today until June 31 advocating an end to the war.

DEMOCRATS RETURN TO SYMBOLIC VOTES AGAINST THE WAR (SORT OF) AS THEY PREPARE TO FUND THE WAR FULLYYesterday the Democratic leadership orchestrated a symbolic vote in the U.S. Senate on the “Feingold Amendment” which would have removed combat troops – except for some very broad exceptions – by March of 2008. Forty-seven Republicans, one independent and 19 Democrats opposed the plan drafted by Senator Russell D. Feingold, Democrat of Wisconsin, which would have limited spending mainly to counterterrorism and the training of Iraqi troops after March 31, 2008.

HOUSE VOTES MORE FUNDING FOR THE WAR, DIVIDES IT IN TWO PARTS; SUPPORT FOR COMPLETE WITHDRAWAL INCREASES TO 171 MEMBERSThe U.S. House of Representatives took several votes yesterday on the Iraq War. The vote on the McGovern Amendment which would have ended the war received more votes than expected, 171, and the vote on the supplemental picked up two more who oppose funding. The vote shows progress for the anti-war movement in the House. In May 2005 the House voted on the Woolsey Amendment which would have ended the war and the vote was 300 to 128 with five not voting. Evident progress is being made, and we expect to see more rapid progress in the fall when it becomes evident the surge has failed and the 2008 elections get closer.
