Why I Was Among Eight Health Care Advocates to Get Arrested in the Senate Yesterday The Senate Finance Committee is excluding single payer advocates from their hearings. They only want to hear from the insurance industry, HMO's and pharmaceuticals -- the corporations that caused the health care crisis. As a result, yesterday eight of us protested by telling the truth in the senate. We were all arrested but hopefully, a new phase of the movement for a real national health plan has started.

For His 200th Birthday, Honoring Marx As An Activist Marx's vision of socialism had nothing in common with one-party dictatorships like the former Soviet Union that declared themselves to be socialist or communist. For Marx, the key question was not whether the economy was controlled by the state, but which class controlled the state. A society can only be socialist if power is in the hands of workers themselves.

Torture Accountability Requires the People to Demand It The Attorney General is considering a special prosecutor to investigate torture. People who want torture accountability need to increase their activity. A full investigation that excludes no one including policy makers in the White House is needed. The Department of Justice must follow the law and appoint a independent prosecutor to ensure the rule of law is followed. Anything less further undermines DOJ's credibility.

The solutions are in our history if only the corporate duopoly was not set on repeating mistakes rather than learning from history.

No More Pretense for Health Reform The fraud of Democratic Party health care proposals is evident now that the CBO has reported that ten years from now, under the most robust Democratic proposal, 36 million Americans will not have insurance. The only people that will profit from these proposals are the insurance industry. The necessities of the people will not be met. Does Obama have any political courage?

But, is this the debate Americans needed? Do we need to candidates that agree to such a large degree on all the key issues facing the country from the bailout to militarism?

If they put in place programs for the people rather than their funders their rule will continue. If not, it ends in 2012.

Bush Heats Up Iran Rhetoric Through Evangelical Allies – "U.S. could lose a city, or ten cities or a hundred" Bush seems to be using his evangelical base to build fear of Iran and support for a military attack. Can Congress stop an attack on Iran? Yes, in fact it has the constitutional power to do so, but probably will be silently complicit and allow the Iraq War to expand into a Mid-East War.

The Democrats Want the Peace Movement to Work for Them; The Peace Movement Needs to Demand the Democrats End the War The Democrats want to enlist the anti-war movement in their efforts to elect more Democrats but they are not willing to use the power they currently have to end the war. In 2004 many in the peace movement made the mistake of buying into the "Anybody But Bush" rhetoric. This year we should insist the Democrats end the war if they want the peace vote.

Obama recently said he would leave the 140,000 private contractors aka mercenaries in Iraq, have strike forces in the region, leave tens of thousands of non-combat troops and keep the U.S. Embassy and long-term bases. This is not withdrawal from Iraq. Is it time for the peace movement to protest Obama to stop his rightward drift?
