the effort of the administration seems to be to cram as much of the bad news as it can into the shortest amount of time, thus overwhelming the public’s ability to judge, to assign responsibility, and to hold accountable those in public office who have failed the public trust.
This nation cannot afford to let itself be stampeded again, as it was after September 11th, 2001. There is more than enough time to sift both the policies and the politics. We should take a leaf from the Pennsylvania prophet and philosopher, Puxsutawney Phil whose annual “day in the sun” is February 2nd. If Phil sees his shadow, he will go back into his shelter and we will have six more weeks of winter. According to USA Today, winter will be with us for six more weeks.
That’s more than enough time, politically speaking, to recover our perspective and our promise. On the down side, six weeks brings us to March 15th – the Ides of March. And four days before the anniversary of the start of the Iraq invasion in 2003.
