The scope of this ecological and human tragedy, still unfolding, is already unprecedented in US and perhaps world history, yet the US government has yet to declare a national emergency, as it should have done weeks ago. This would allow a much larger and more urgent response and the utilization of all available resources.
Why did President Obama trust BP to control the situation in the first place, and why does he allow it to continue? Our shores are under assault from an enemy far greater than Osama bin Laden or any other terrorist could have imagined. Many thousands of lives and livelihoods are at stake, and an entire ecosystem is on the brink of collapse. Yet the US government continues in its failure to respond with the magnitude necessary to meet the scope of this catastrophe. Horribly, it may already be too late to save the Gulf. The long-term effects will extend far beyond this region, and for decades to come.
