Imagine a white man speaking to a white audience implying that white lawyers should be more ethical than black lawyers. Then the white federal employee goes on to tell a story about how he recently , presumably employed by the UDSA, blocked the forced sale of some white owned farmland to a black man.
Finally, he takes a jab at the democratic party for blindly supporting President Obama just because he's not white.
Regardless of whatever inspirational messages of overcoming prejudice or uplifting calls for unity appear in that speech, I am going to go out on a limb and say that individual won't be a burden to the government payroll for very long after that speech becomes well known.
Black women are as capable, tough, strong, and smart as any demographic. To believe otherwise is racist, sexist, or both, and stupid. Ms. Sherrod should be held to the same standard as anyone else, that's equality and that's respect.
Certainly there should be compassion and empathy for her life experiences. We can and should learn much from Americans like Shirley Sherrod, and I dare say she can play an important role in our National dialogue.
Remember Don Imus? All of his philanthropic works and history meant nothing next to his crass and racist insults towards some exemplary young women. We righteously called for his head and it rolled.
Trent Lott didn't even mention race, explicitly or implicitly, What he did say was inexcusably ill advised. We can and should expect more from a senatorial leader. We did.
Should Ms. Sherrod be held to a different standard because she is a black woman and not a white man? Are we that backwards as a people?
Let's end the racist patronising. Equal means equal. We have to stop treating blacks in America like special cases, because that sword cuts both ways.
In 2006 my good friend and neighbour was murdered on my doorstep. Black on Black crime. He had enough time to run for help, I was forty miles away when he came to my door. He fell, and our racist cops didn't even collect the evidence at the scene. His murder remains unsolved.
Enough double standards. My friend was an American, a father, and a good man. I wish the detectives who blew off that case had been forced to look his daughters in the eye at his funeral.
I also wish a good deal of the media and blogosphere would stop letting their political leanings get in the way of realising that Sherrod said more than enough to be fired in that speech, regardless of how much of a swine fornicator Breitbart might be for his hit piece on her.
Are we a people? Are we separate tribes? I know what I pray for. How about you?
