But they will not. And because of this dereliction of duty, they are destined to go down with him.
Beale: "so we don't go out anymore. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we are living in is getting smaller, and all we say is: Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel belted radials and I won't say anything. Just leave us alone."
Now: how long will the American people remain in their current state of silence and subservience when they can clearly see this government is totally dysfunctional with a Congress full of incompetents who collect taxpayer money and do nothing of substance to earn it.
There are so many different problems that this government should be addressing, from a very costly, less than effective healthcare system, to repairing the nation's infrastructure, to vastly improving our education system; and it just isn't happening.
Beale: "and the Russians and the crime in the street. All I know is that first, you've got to get mad. (shouting) You've got to say: 'I'm a human being, god-dammit! My life has value." Shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Punks are running wild in the street and there's nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there's no end to it."
Now: the American people watch as children across the country are gunned down in their own schools, most often by someone who uses a military assault-style rifle equipped with bump stocks or large ammunition magazines. When the news of another mass shooting is reported there is extreme shock and a sense of horror in our society but, not long after, everything settles down, news reports disappear, and Americans return to business as usual.
Republican Trump-controlled politicians in Congress don't even blink an eye, let alone do something to stop these attacks on our society, against our children. Murders of children and other innocent Americans have not resulted in initiatives to bring this situation under control.
The political prostitutes in Congress continue to take campaign contributions from the NRA, an organization closely aligned with the gun manufacturers. It works very hard to prevent any form of gun safety controls from being put into effect; and, in fact, is often accused of facilitating these mass shootings.
if we had a Howard Beale as a TV news anchor in America today and he implored his audience to go to the window, stick their heads out, and shout out those words of anger, would anyone do it? Not likely.
Here is one thing that stands out about America. We are living in a society, in a culture, that does not encourage or tolerate the emotion of anger at its government. It is just not appropriate, it must be suppressed. What is appropriate in the America of today is to just accept what is going on, continue to maintain trust in this government no matter what those in control do; no matter how wrong it may be.
