Why have activist reports brought food reform--albeit too slowly--when press reports didn't? Money! Once egregious practices of suppliers to huge retailers like McDonald's or and Walmart hit the Nightly News, consumers could vote with their wallet--and did. Many food producers are furious that consumers now want to know how animals live and die. They preferred the days when it was none of the consumers' business.
